By Douglas Wu
An internationally renowned concert pianist in Columbus is now accepting students of all ages, all skill levels, and all styles.
Helen Lin, founder of the Helen Lin International Piano Academy, has over 15 years of teaching experience. Her students, from 3-years-old to 75-years-old, have included the owners of the Cincinnati Reds, Graeter's Ice Cream, and deans and professors of colleges and universities, medical doctors and musicians seeking careers in music.
The Helen Lin International Piano Academy provides students with on-on-one lessons each week, one recital for students every three months, optional Halloween concerts, Christmas concerts and many other performance opportunities and competitions.
Lin's professional engagements have ranged from performing as a full-scholarship recipient at the Tanglewood, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner Music festivals, to tour as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and chamber musician in Germany, France, Austria, Russia, Italy, Spain, the United States, Japan, Korea, and her native country of Taiwan.
Since 1996 her performances have been broadcast on television and radio stations frequently throughout the United States including TV channel 22 and WGUC in Cincinnati, Ohio. And, the American Music Scholarship Association made her performance of "Chopin's E Minor Concerto" as an educational videotape. The most recent prizes that she has won have included "The Young Artist International Piano Competition," the "IBLA Grand Prize Piano Competition," and the "Rising Star Concert Series Piano Competition."
Lin was such a sensational phenomenon during her performance at The National Concert Hall in Taipei, Taiwan that the tickets were sold out in the first three days. Taiwanese President Mr. Chen had delivered a congratulatory telegram at the time of the concert. Also, the mayor of Taipei, Taiwan had a basket of flowers sent to Lin before the event started.
In 2001 she was invited by the Maria Canals International Piano Foundation to give a solo recital in Barcelona, Spain; a solo recital in Paris, France, hosted by Yamaha Pianos; two solo recitals in Barletta, Italy; and a concerto concert in Como, Italy. In 2003 she was voted as one of the top eight musicians by the web concert hall competition.
Her newly released CD, "In Remembrance of September 11th" has become the "textbook" at universities for music appreciation classes. Her live concert, "Dream of Love", will be broadcast on PBS stations in the fall.
Lin's performances have been described as "charismatic, contagious, of the highest level from which she communicates the essence of music combined with her vivid imagination and outstanding pianism..."; "unique as she exhibits great individuality, command, and unusually strong musical conviction with fiery temperament."
Besides her career as a concert pianist, she was the first master teacher at Doylestown Community Conservatory of Music - Philadelphia, Penn. - and the Resident Artist at Premier Pianos for Steinway Pianos at Cincinnati, Ohio in 2005. Lin was a member of the piano faculty at the Preparatory Department, an opera coach and a staff accompanist at the College of Conservatory of Music, Univeristy of Cincinnati, Cincinatti, Ohio.
After receiving a master of music degree in piano performance with a full scholarship at CCM, she has continued her studies with full scholarship under the eminent scholar James Tocco and the Pridonoff Duo for the degree of doctor of music degree in piano performance. She has attended the Julliard School and Michigan State University for her bachelor's degree.
Lin's CD's are available at Barnes & Nobles, Borders and Joseph and Beth bookstores.
